Veramaris Sustainable Development Report
SUPPORTING OCEAN HEALTH
By 2050, people all over the world are likely to eat twice as much blue food –fish, shellfish and seaweed. This growing demand will mostly be served by farm-raised seafood, so demand is growing for aquaculture feed too. Essential long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids are nutrients that must be added to the feed for some farm-raised species and these nutrients have traditionally been sourced from fish oil, which often comes from wild-caught fish.
Through the provision of Omega-3 (EPA & DHA) sourced from algal oil, Veramaris provides a reliable and renewable alternative that is affordable too. And better yet, ensures that aquaculture can grow without increasing demand on our oceans to help restore and maintain their fragile balance.
Talking About Emissions
Climate change represents one of the biggest challenges that we all face today. Blue foods from the ocean are relatively ‘climate-friendly’ alternatives to land-raised animals, but there is still room for improvement. Veramaris can support change by providing a certified sustainable source of Omega-3 which helps to control the marine footprint and the carbon footprint of aquaculture feed whilst keeping farm-raised animals healthy too, which improves productivity.
Veramaris is committed to reducing all aspects of our Scopes 1-3 emissions. By setting Science Based Targets and by engaging with our suppliers, we are confident our actions today will deliver results to support a better future.
Nutritious Farm-Raised Seafood
Just like people, fish and shrimp also ’are what they eat’. Veramaris is working hard to give farmers the tools to decide how much Omega-3 (EPA & DHA) that their fish and shrimp will contain. Together with our supply chain partners, we have shown how algal oil can be used to control of Omega-3 content in farmed salmon, ensuring maximum product quality and delivering on the promise of farmed salmon as great source of Omega-3.
Through empowering farmers to decide what level of EPA & DHA they want to have in a fish fillet, Veramaris is ensuring that consumers can be confident they’re getting their weekly intake of long chain Omega-3s.
Healthier Feed for Healthier Fish
There is nothing more important for farmers than the health and welfare of the animals in their farms. With the Optimum Omega Nutrition (OON) feed protocol, Veramaris helps farmers to have better control over fish and shrimp health to reduce waste, improve quality and create better farming outcomes. For all players along the supply chain, our ASC-MSC certified product does much to provide a dependable, high-quality source of Omega-3 (EPA & DHA) – from feed millers to retailers.
By working with partners to refine our OON approach, we’ve been able to prove the importance of correct essential fatty acid ratios throughout animal lifecycles. Today, we offer farmers a nutritional solution that helps to control their production results.
