Veramaris® Pets all set for soaring sales after GRAS approval for cats

Just four months after receiving the go ahead to sell its Veramaris® Pets marine microalgae oil as a dog food ingredient, the product has now been given another boost by receiving approval as an ingredient in cat food.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) has concluded that a GRAS1 notice submitted by Veramaris for cat foods has successfully passed their intensive review of the published safety and function data.

Like the GRAS approval for dog food, this means that Veramaris Pets natural marine algal oil can be incorporated into cat food across all 50 US states, providing the pet food industry with a new, sustainable source of Omega-3 fatty acids.

In fact, the product’s sustainability credentials is acknowledged by both Aquaculture Stewardship Council and Marine Stewardship Council, with Veramaris recently becoming the first American producer to achieve joint ASC-MSC certification to the Seaweed (Algae) Standard.

Veramaris’ algal oil is the only Omega-3 oil to deliver both EPA & DHA Omega-3 in high concentrations; more than twice that found in fish oils commonly used in pet food, and in palatability tests, was the preferred option when the oil was tested in dry cat and dog food.

The scalable, land-based cultivation process ensures a consistent high-quality product, that is free from ocean-borne contaminants whilst being 100% natural and non-GMO.

Veramaris’ algal oil is also a sustainable choice for pet food; 1 kg of Veramaris’ algal oil helps preserve 60kg of wild fish needed for an equal amount of EPA & DHA Omega-3.

According to Jeff Alix, Veramaris’ Global Head of Business Development for Companion Animals, “The U.S. approval of our feline GRAS submission completes the registration for use of Veramaris Pets in dog and cat foods, in all life stages and all major pet food markets around the world.

“Veramaris is thrilled that pet food companies across the globe can freely use Veramaris Pets in their product formulations allowing them to achieve another milestone in their quest to produce more sustainable products.

“This approval allows companies operating in one of the world’s largest pet food markets to design their products, not only to provide our furry friends long-term health and wellness, but to do so in a more environmentally friendly way.”

Veramaris Pets natural marine algal oil is made from microalgae, grown in a U.S. waste-free production facility, and proven to contribute to the health of both pets and our oceans.
